An analysis of nicotine data from the Ministry of Health’s e-liquid testing programme shows that 58% of vapes were mislabelled, with the majority containing less nicotine than stated on the label.

The testing was conducted between June 2023 and June 2024 by the Institute of Environmental Science and Research (ESR) under contract to the Ministry of Health.

The ESR testing data was obtained and analysed by ASPIRE Aotearoa researchers Renee Hosking, Jude Ball, Calvin Cochran, and Janet Hoek, with their findings highlighting the need for greater transparency and enforcement of regulatory standards.
